Gantt Chart View

The Gantt Chart is one of the tabs inside an individual project. It plots the project's tasks and milestones as horizontal bars along a calendar axis, so you can see at a glance what runs when, what overlaps, and how the work lines up against your milestones.

The chart is built from your existing task data — it uses the same tasks you see on the project's Tasks tab and Task Board, and dragging a bar writes new dates back to the task. The timeline can be switched between Day, Week, Month and Year scales, and the chart can optionally be exposed to the project's client through the Public Gantt Chart setting.

Who can use it

  • Company Admins and project members who can open the project can open its Gantt Chart tab.
  • Clients see the Gantt chart only when Public Gantt Chart is enabled on that specific project. New projects are created with it set to Enable, and the setting is per project — changing it on one project does not affect any other.
  • Milestones shown on the chart still respect milestone view permission. A user whose milestone view permission is set to None does not see milestones.

Prerequisites

  • A project must exist at Projects (/account/projects).
  • The project needs at least one task. Tasks are created from Tasks (/account/tasks/create) or from inside the project.
  • Tasks need at least one date — a start date or a due date — to be plotted. A task that has only one of the two does appear on the chart.
  • To let a client see the chart, Public Gantt Chart must be set to Enable in the project's settings.

How to Access

  1. Go to Projects — /account/projects.
  2. Open the project you want.
  3. Select the Gantt Chart tab from the project's tab bar (alongside Overview, Files, Milestones, Tasks, Task Board, Burndown Chart and the rest).

Project Roadmap

Reading the chart

Each task is drawn as a horizontal bar positioned along the calendar axis:

  • The bar spans the task's scheduled period, from its start date to its due date.
  • A task with only one date is still placed on the chart — it is drawn as a single-day bar at whichever date it has, rather than being skipped.
  • Milestones appear alongside the tasks as grouping rows, with their tasks nested underneath. If a milestone has no start date of its own, the chart falls back to the earliest start date among its linked tasks, and failing that to the milestone's own end date. A milestone with none of those three dates is left off the chart.

Changing the time scale

The chart has a View dropdown above the timeline offering four time scales. It opens on Week:

ViewWhat it showsTypical use
DayIndividual days across the axisDetailed short-range scheduling
WeekWeek boundariesWeek-by-week planning and status reviews
MonthMonth boundariesMulti-month project overviews
YearYear-level scaleLong-running programmes and multi-year roadmaps

Switch scales with the View dropdown, then scroll horizontally to move along the timeline. Changing the view only changes how the timeline is drawn — it never changes task dates.

Rescheduling from the chart

The Gantt chart is not read-only. Dragging a task bar sideways, or dragging its edge to resize it, writes the new start and due dates back to the task itself.

  • This is gated by your edit tasks permission. Users without it — including view-only clients and employees — cannot reschedule from the chart.
  • Milestone rows cannot be dragged or used as the endpoint of a dependency link; only real task bars can.
  • You can also draw dependency links between two task bars by dragging from one bar's connector to another. Links you create are stored with the project and redrawn each time the chart loads.

Sharing the chart with a client

  1. Open the project and edit its settings.
  2. Set Public Gantt Chart to Enable.
  3. Save. The project's client can now see the project's Gantt chart from the client portal.

Because new projects start with this set to Enable, set it to Disable on any project whose schedule you do not want the client to see. The related Public Task Board setting is separate and controls the Task Board independently.

Effect on other features

  • Tasks — the chart and the task records share one set of dates in both directions. Dates changed on a task from the Tasks list are reflected on the chart, and dragging a bar on the chart updates the task.
  • Milestones — Milestones appear on the chart as grouping rows above their tasks. They are display-only rows: they cannot be dragged, and dependency links cannot be attached to them.
  • Public Task Board — a separate per-project toggle; enabling the Gantt chart for clients does not enable the task board, and vice versa.
  • Burndown Chart — the Burndown Chart tab uses the same task data to show progress over time and complements the Gantt view.

Limitations

  • Tasks with no dates at all are not plotted. A timeline needs a date to place a bar on. Workaround: open the task and set either a start date or a due date — one of the two is enough for it to appear.
  • The chart shows one project at a time. There is no combined cross-project Gantt on this tab. Workaround: use the Project Roadmap (/account/projectroadmap) for a view spanning multiple projects.
  • Client visibility is all-or-nothing per project. Public Gantt Chart exposes the project's whole schedule to the client, or none of it — there is no per-task filtering of what the client sees. Workaround: set Public Gantt Chart to Disable on any project whose schedule should stay internal, and share progress through the project's other reporting tabs instead.
  • Milestone rows cannot carry dependency links. Links can only join two task bars. Workaround: draw the dependency between the underlying tasks rather than to the milestone row.
  • Milestone visibility is permission-driven. Users with milestone view permission set to None will not see the milestone markers. Workaround: have an admin grant milestone view permission to the role that needs it.

Troubleshooting

A task is missing from the chart. Confirm the task has at least one date. Tasks with neither a start date nor a due date cannot be positioned on a timeline; adding either one is sufficient to make the task show up.

The client says the Gantt tab is not visible to them. Public Gantt Chart is set per project. Open that specific project's settings and confirm it is set to Enable for that project.

A milestone is missing from the chart. A milestone is only plotted if it has a start date, a linked task with a start date, or its own end date. Set a start or end date on the milestone.

A milestone appears at an unexpected position. A milestone with no start date of its own is positioned using the earliest start date among its linked tasks, or its own end date if none of the tasks have one. Set an explicit start date on the milestone if you want it placed elsewhere.

Dragging a bar does nothing. Rescheduling from the chart requires the edit-tasks permission, and milestone rows are never draggable. Ask an admin to check your task permissions.

Milestones are missing entirely for a particular user. Check that user's milestone view permission — when it is set to None, milestones are hidden everywhere, including on the Gantt chart.

The timeline is too dense or too sparse to read. Change the View dropdown: Day or Week for detail, Month or Year for a long-range overview.
